Panama > Costa Rica > El Salvador > Guatemala > Belize >

The relaxed Caribbean vibes of Belize were a welcome change from Guatemala, but if I thought I would have time to recharge my batteries I was wrong.

Belize, formerly known as British Honduras, is the only country in Central America where English is the official language.

The eco-lodge in Chaa Creek, San Ignacio on the Belize/Guatemala border, was a perfect base for our excursions to Tikal in Guatemala and jungle trekking in Northern Belize.

I was also able to explore Belize from the air; a micro-light flight buzzing across the jungle canopy certainly gives you a new perspective on life in the jungle.

Soaring like a bird high above the Belize jungle

As clichéd as it sounds, the Mayan ruins are one of the ‘must see’ places in Central America and while we did this we had the opportunity to explore the ancient Mayan caves.

After a couple of hours slogging through the jungle we found the entrance to the caves; an eerie experience I am sure you will agree.

Entrance to Mayan caves- what would we find?

I felt uneasy entering the caves, as if someone or something was watching us, rumour was these caves were used for sacrificial purposes. We soon found out there could well be some truth to the rumours.

I didn’t listen to the announcements not to put my head out of the window

Continuing our Mayan theme, we visited Tikal and Uaxactun in Guatemala. Tikal is perhaps, along with Machu Picchu, the most famous of all of Latin America’s pre-Colombian civilisations’ ruins.

Located near the town of Flores deep in the Guatemalan jungle, Tikal is surprisingly easy to reach from Belize where buses depart several times a day.

What I loved about Tikal and the other ruins in the area is how open they are and how free you are to explore them at your leisure.

After our Mayan adventure it was time for a spot of diving, something Belize is perfect for. The 186 mile - long reef off the Belize coast is a journey in itself and diving with the stingrays is an experience I’ll never forget.

I arrived home from my travels weary, why do you always need a holiday to recover when you come home from a trip? Central America turned out to be a land of contrasts, daunting and forbidding but warm and welcoming all at the same time. I urge everyone to visit. Next stop South America!
