Carry your wife over a 250m obstacle course including a water section to win your missus’s weight in beer. The annual Wife Carrying World Championships takes place in Sonkajärvi, Finland. The origins of the event dates back to the 19th Century when a local hard man called Rosvo-Ronkainen would only allow men into is gang who were tough enough and had proved themselves in a contest. The contest was to steal a woman from a neighbouring village, hence a tradition was born

Ironman European Championship

A major event on the European sporting calendar, the Ironman European Championship takes place in Frankfurt. Attracting the world’s finest ironmen and women the championship is, along with Hawaii, the largest in the world. The course includes a 2.3mile swim in the Langener Waldsee, a 111mile bike ride before finishing with a marathon. Only the toughest need apply. For spectators there are cultural events and gastronomic delights to take in during the run-up to the event.
