Why you need maps

The GPS has become a cornerstone of navigation, a tool used by everyone from us on our expeditions, to housewives picking up the weekly shop. But now it seems the sat-nav is set to become obsolete.

The US Air Force are well behind schedule in repairing the satellites that keep GPSs running and are predicting regular sat-nav blackouts in 2010 and even rogue units directing people in completely the wrong direction.

So it’s probably time you dusted off your compass and got yourself a good map because otherwise you could spend a lot of next year lost!
