Due North?
Finding out which way is north is a great start in basic navigation. Check the position of the sun and the time to figure out which way East and West are and find your bearings from there. Or you might want to have a look at where the moss is growing on trees.
GPS
We love maps. We love pouring over them and spending hours plotting our routes. But when the winds blowing, rains pouring and you've had just a few hours sleep, a GPS can be the only option. Now they come on phones there really isn't an excuse not to take one.
Plot Your Route Before Hand
Ok so you don't need to figure out every toilet stop but it's a good idea to get a vague idea how you are going to get from A to B.
Spread The Word
Let people know where you're going! If you are going off the grid for a few days, people will worry so try and let them know when and where it'll happen so if something goes wrong, they can get help to you.
Head For Height
Some phones now come with altitude readers on so you can keep track of how high you are. This is essential for pacing and conditioning yourself for the rigors of high altitude exploring.
